When a filling has been placed in a tooth it can leave parts of the tooth undermined. With the stress of chewing and grinding the tooth can then develop cracks. These start as hairline cracks and may make the tooth tender on biting, or sensitive to sweet or cold things. Eventually the cracked section of tooth may break away.
